Metadata
Metadata is information describing other information source. For example and abstract or a list of keywords can assist a viewer to evaluate an information source at a glance. In recent years Metadata has declined in importance. This trend is being reversed as the semantic web initiative allows users to add new and more sophisticated Metadata into their web sites making them more friendly for machine processing.
SEO and Keyword Stuffing
The Metadata in a web page was historically significant in the page's ranking formula. Metadata has been so widely abused that it only contributes marginally to increase page-rank. On the other hand, metadata can if abused negatively impact page rank. This can occur in two ways. The first type of abuse is the introduction of unrepresentative keywords. The second case in the introduction of too many keywords.
